SPORTSPERSON OF THE WEEK – 9TH – 15TH JANUARY 2012

Posted on: January 16th, 2012 by Scott 3 Comments

It’s been a quiet week for sport in general. There have been no outstanding performances to speak of and so I had difficulty in compiling the nominees. However, these are the five up for this weeks award.

Nominees

Thierry Henry

Monty Panesar

Paul Scholes

David Warner

Brendan Rogers

Thierry Henry is a Premier League legend. Without doubt one of the finest players of the modern era, Henry has caused great excitement by returning to Arsenal on a 2-month loan from New York Red Bulls. The question was, could Henry still cut it at this level at the age of 34. While that question still remains, on Monday, he showed why he still has the fans drooling. In a tight FA Cup tie at home to Leeds, Henry was brought off the bench by Arsene Wenger and curled a beauty into the back of the net. Henry proving that age doesn’t matter if you still have the mind for the job.

Monty Panesar is an England Cricket fans favourite. He is a likeable guy who has disappeared off the England radar after bursting onto the scene around 5 years ago. In the first warm game on Englands’ tour of the UAE, Monty showed why he should still be in the reckoning with a brilliant 5-wicket display, earning him a place on this list.

Paul Scholes is on the list of nominees for much the same reason as Thierry Henry. Fergie pulled a rabbit out the hat by bringing him back to the United squad 6 months after retiring and while some of his play has been wayward, Scholes’ goal against Bolton on Saturday will live long in the memories of United fans.

David Warner has long been seen as a one-day specialist. In a series where the Aussies have demolished a woeful India, Warner had license to bring his ODI flair to the test arena. Opening the batting, Warner smashed 180 from 159 balls to set the Aussies up for an innings win over India. A strong performance makes him a strong contender on this list.

Brendan Rogers’ Swansea City have impressed all in the Premier League this year. They play a style of football that is so graceful and enjoyable to watch. They have dominated possession against nearly every team after being promoted and have a great chance of staying up. Against Arsenal on Sunday, they showed all their class and ability plus a great deal of character to claim a famous win, and Rogers must take great credit.

WINNER: BRENDAN ROGERS

I feel this weeks award cannot go to anyone else. He has turned Swansea into a strong Premier League outfit and they are a side fit to grace any tournament in the world. Good work Brendan!
